The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), in collaboration with BAKDIL, officially launched the Micro Enterprises Promotion Programme (MEPP) in the Garo Hills region today. The initiative aims to foster entrepreneurship and generate sustainable livelihoods through the promotion of viable micro and small enterprises in both rural and semi-urban areas.

SIDBI, a principal financial institution in India dedicated to the growth of the MSME sector, is implementing MEPP under its flagship Mission Swavalamban. The programme seeks to transform local youth from job seekers into job creators, reduce urban migration, and leverage local resources for commercial sustainability. The programme, which will be implemented by BAKDIL over the next five years, targets all five districts of the Garo Hills. Depending on progress and performance, the initiative may be extended further.

As part of the programme’s scope of work, BAKDIL will facilitate the promotion of at least 500 micro-enterprises, especially among tribal women entrepreneurs. The focus will be on both traditional livelihoods (such as textiles, food processing, bamboo crafts) and modern ventures like bakeries and cafés. Enterprises in the services sector will also be eligible. All units will be supported in obtaining Udyam Registration under the Ministry of MSME, and in securing credit linkages with nationalized banks, RRBs, small finance banks, NBFCs, and MFIs.

The launch programme was presided over by Fr. Cyril Sangma, Director of BAKDIL, who welcomed participants and stakeholders. He was joined by Mr. S. Pauminthang Gangte (Assistant General Manager, SIDBI), who expressed SIDBI’s eagerness to work closely with BAKDIL in fostering enterprise-led development in the region.
